Exotic Bet Cost Calculator

Calculate exacta, trifecta, and superfecta box ticket costs by base bet and number of horses. Exotic bets can become expensive quickly because combinations multiply. This calculator estimates ticket cost only; actual payouts depend on final pools, takeout, and how many winning tickets split the pool.

Exacta, trifecta, and superfecta box calculator

Enter the bet type, base unit, and number of horses in your box. The calculator multiplies the number of possible finishing-order combinations by your base bet amount.

Ticket combinations and estimated cost are shown here. Actual payouts depend on final pool size, takeout, and split with other winning tickets.

How exotic bet ticket cost is calculated

Ticket cost = number of combinations × base bet amount. In a box, every selected horse can finish in each required position, so the count uses ordered combinations.

Exacta box formula

Exacta box: n × (n - 1)

You need the first two finishers in either order.

Trifecta box formula

Trifecta box: n × (n - 1) × (n - 2)

You need the first three finishers in any covered order.

Superfecta box formula

Superfecta box: n × (n - 1) × (n - 2) × (n - 3)

You need the first four finishers in any covered order.

Worked example

A $1 trifecta box with 4 horses costs 24 combinations × $1 = $24.

How to calculate exotic bet cost

  1. Choose exacta, trifecta, or superfecta.
  2. Enter the base bet amount.
  3. Enter how many horses are in your box.
  4. Calculate the number of possible finishing-order combinations.
  5. Multiply combinations by the base bet amount.
  6. Review the total ticket cost before betting.

Box coverage is not the same as value

Boxing more horses can improve coverage, but the price rises with every added combination. That does not mean the ticket is better. It means the ticket is more expensive.

Exotics are high-variance bets. If your handicapping opinion is weak, adding horses may just turn uncertainty into a bigger invoice.

Exotic Bet Cost FAQ

How much does an exacta box cost?

An exacta box costs n × (n - 1) combinations multiplied by the base bet. For example, a $1 exacta box with 4 horses costs 12 combinations × $1 = $12.

How much does a trifecta box cost?

A trifecta box costs n × (n - 1) × (n - 2) combinations multiplied by the base bet. A $1 trifecta box with 4 horses costs 24 combinations × $1 = $24.

How much does a superfecta box cost?

A superfecta box costs n × (n - 1) × (n - 2) × (n - 3) combinations multiplied by the base bet. A $0.10 superfecta box with 5 horses costs 120 combinations × $0.10 = $12.

Why do exotic bet tickets get expensive so fast?

Exotic boxes cover many possible finishing orders. Each added horse can multiply the number of combinations, so cost can rise much faster than the base bet looks.

Does boxing more horses make the bet better?

No. Boxing more horses increases coverage and cost, but it does not automatically create value or improve your edge. The ticket still has to be worth its price after takeout and pool competition.

What is the difference between a box and a straight exotic bet?

A straight exotic bet uses one exact finishing order. A box covers every finishing order among the horses you selected, which creates more combinations and a higher ticket cost.

Price the ticket before the ticket prices you

Run the cost, compare it with your bankroll, and remember: more combinations increase cost, not edge.
